I am an elementary art teacher & expend this video while teaching Claude Monet. I never tire of watching it, & neither do the kids. I employ it in my third grade curriculum, but kids in grades 4-6 expect to ogle it again & again! I also utilize the book of the same name which is nearly identical to the video. It is 30 minutes long, objective true for young attention spans, and allows time at the extinguish of class to develop lily pads & flowers “from Monet’s Garden”! My current lesson. )

I consume this video in an “Arts Alive” presentation I do for third graders. I have old-fashioned it for 3 years and it is VERY well received by the classes. It really brings Monet’s paintings alive and shows them that art quiet lives. It is a combo of cartoon tale, detached photos of Monet’s works and live-action video of his home in Giverny. A perfect choice for any school arts program of a colossal video for kids of any age.

In case you were wondering, this is a double sided DVD with the main menus and special features as they were originally released, so it really is like two DVDs for the price of one.

As an avid viewer of the gangster genre, I went into this one with high hopes…and wasn’t disappointed. This film paints mobsters in the same sympathetic light that the original Godfather does (not the other ones, of course). DeNiro reenacts his famous heavy-handed mobster role with a whole new perspective in this very entertaining comedy. His off the wall character of a mob boss who breaks into tears at random intervals is priceless. Crystal works as the perfect dichotomy as the nervous psychologist who winds up over his head before he knows what has hit him. This film, although nothing past a simple comedy, is terrifically written and has more than it’s fair share of laughs. Watch it. Have fun.

I’ve seen this several times and will see it many more. As video format technology changes, this is one of the ones I buy again and again. Drama, suspense, humor, chivalry, and a splash of romance are all here, wonderfully acted and brilliantly directed.

If you have never seen this film, picture this: Erich von Stroheim as “Rauffenstein” sitting at a table in his commandant’s uniform, wearing a neck brace and white gloves. “Marechal” (played by Jean Gabin), his French prisoner of war, stands before him. The German commandant, report in hand, reads aloud the fact that Marechal has 5 previous escape attempts. He shakes his head, as he continues readings, one time “disguised as a woman”, referring to Marechal’s escape exploits. “Amusing, very amusing.” To which a smiling Marechal responds, “But less so when a NCO tried to pick me up. That I didn’t like!” Commandant: “Indeed?” Marechal, still smiling: “I assure you.” This is the tone of this film for those amongst you who only know this is supposed to be a great film, but know little about it. In essence, it’s a contrast between social classes, of an aristocratic age giving way to working class reality. Early in the film Marechal and his compatriot Boldieu, having been shot down by Rauffenstein himself, are invited to dine with their captor, thanks to Boldieu’s aristocratic status. So this subsequent scene is a reunion of sorts. As the film progresses we see Rauffenstein reach out to Bolieu as a fellow career officer and aristocrat. Boldieu, however, in the end, sacrifices himself for his fellow countrymen; showing that nationalism is stronger than class. The director, laments this, and it is this which is the point of the film. That said, is this a great film? (That’s why you’re reading this, I presume; to gauge whether this film might interest you or not.) I would posit that the message herein, as indicated above, is the primary reason this film is raved about; Jean Renoir’s deft direction notwithstanding. The substance of the film, conversely, is less grand. First of all, this military film is peopled primarily by officers only. Moreover, the POW camp environments depicted herein are rather comfortable looking. The prisoners eat well (thanks, in part, to some food parcels from home), they have books, they appear in clean uniforms, etc. They even receive a huge crate from home full of ladies clothing—dresses, shoes, wigs, corsets, the works!—so that they (for some reason, primarily only British soldiers in this French production!) can put on a cabaret drag show. Presumably, this is supposed to boost morale, but if anything the life these prisoners seem to lead is far too cheerful; full of cheekiness too. To boot, as their escape tunnel nears completion, some even express mixed feelings about leaving their camp! (Incidentally, this is not an “escape” film, however much this review may seem otherwise. They talk about it a bit, and prepare for it little more. But we only see one escape attempt in this film and that consists of two soldiers going over a wall.) That few seem especially keen on escaping is actually logical, in the sense that few of these soldiers are seemingly interested in fighting anyway—director’s commentary on the idiocy of war, I assume. Jean Renoir did declare himself a pacifist, after all, around the time he made this film. So there you have it—a great film if you’re so inclined as well; otherwise, judging this film on cinematic grounds only, not as substantial as its reputation. Cheers!

One of the finest films of all time, directed by Fred ( High Noon, From Here to Eternity ) Zinnemann. Among the ensemble of players are Wendy Hiller, Orson Welles, Susanna York, Robert Shaw, Leo Mc Kern and–in one of his earliest roles–a young John Hurt. Truly a cast for all seasons!

It’s an acting lesson, headed by the great Paul Scofield who not only captures the essence of Sir Thomas Moore, but who does so with superb economy of motion; he hardly makes a gesture thoughout the entire film— Duse would have loved it.

How does he do it? Well, as I said, it’s an acting lesson. Suffice it to say he rightly deserved winning the Oscar.

Robert Bolt’s brilliant play is a study of contrasts with a mystery at the heart of the theme: Was Moore a Saint who is now in Heaven with The Blessed, or was he a fool who could have died in his bed at a ripe old age after a lifetime of domestic felicity and the highest honors his country could bestow upon him?

If there is no God, or if you believe that the conflict between The Anglican and Catholic Churches to be of no paramount importance, is your integrity still worth losing your head on the chopping block?

Hmm. . .

Magnificent in every respect.

I have loved this movie since I saw it in its original release too many years ago. Certainly, Sir Thomas More was a magnificent person who died a martyr and has been canonized a saint. However, don’t confuse the play and movie with the flesh and blood man. He was much more complex in real life than the purely noble performance of Paul Scofield. You can read the biography of Thomas More by Peter Ackroyd to get at some of his complexities.

But this is a wonderful movie and I recommend it with great enthusiasm. It is a powerful movie and can have some useful at least temporary curative effect on the soul suffering under the ironical detachment and cynicism of our time. Scofield is wonderful and the definitive performance of this role. Orson Welles is quite special as the corpulent and corrupt Cardinal Wolsey. John Hurt is superb as the traitor Richard Rich. Shaw is fine as Henry VIII as is the rest of the cast.

And who can forget the line where More asks to see chain of office that Richard Rich was given to perjure himself and betray More. After examining it and being told that Sir Richard was made the Attorney General of Wales More says, “Richard, it profits a man nothing to trade his soul for the whole world, but for Wales …” Wonderful stuff.

The disk offers the wide screen theatrical release and a full screen version for those who like to see less of the picture in order to avoid the upper and lower “bars”. There is also the original trailer.

There are no other features on the disk beyond scene selection.

This disk belongs in every collection and should be reviewed regularly as an healthful tonic to help remedy the bilious nihilism of our age.

When this film was released in 1985, the critics were not kind, but I treasure this film, and believe it’s a safe telling of the record of David, based on I and II Samuel, I Chronicles, and the Psalms. Though remarkable of it has been compressed (David’s relationship with Bathsheba is little mostly to the consequences of it for instance) and some creative license stale for area continuity, it has a sizable amount of Biblical accuracy.

Taking residence from 1000 to 961 B.C., the costuming, sets, and artifacts are fabulous; filmed in Pinewood Studios, U.K., and on plot in Italy, the cinematography by Donald McAlpine is improbable. The glean is also beautiful, by Carl Davis.

The actor who shines above all though is Edward Woodward as Saul. He is riveting, and it’s a sparkling character watch of courage mixed with jealousy, revenge, and madness.

This is far from being a “Colossal Bible Story” with lots of well known stars, instead it’s serious and beautifully acted, and perhaps arrived on the scene at the wicked time, that it was so unappreciated two decades ago. Total running time is 114 minutes.

“It is through the heart, the heart alone, that God speaks to man”.

Richard Gere conforms gloriously to the role of David. His countenance changes and he makes for a wonderful King David. And Ian Sears made the perfect young King David. The fable begins with the life of a lowly shepherd boy whose bravery and faith in his God ascend him to the throne of feeble Israel. Telling the record from David’s battle with Goliath, to his self-destructive esteem for Bathsheba, to the anointing of his son Solomon by the prophet Nathan to be the King Of Israel. This was a very titillating making of the life of King David. I would devour seeing it again.

I have been watching I Esteem Lucy since my elementary school years. I grew up watching it, even though I wasn’t around when it first came out. Young and ragged worship this reveal.

It is great cheaper buying the complete series than buying each individual season, which is what I did, until I saw this on Amazon, so I sold my other sets to net this one. Usually Amazon is aesthetic competitive with their prices, but I got this spot for $137.72 at Sams Club. Now I will be waiting for complete series of TV sows to reach out, rather than win each individual season of different TV shows.

This state includes all 180 episodes plus the pilot episode to manufacture it 181 episodes from the expose I Esteem Lucy plus the 13 episodes from The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour series for seasons 7, 8, and 9, making it a total of 194 episodes. All of the discs are exactly the same as the individual season boxed sets, but there is a bonus DVD included.

It was stout being able to observe one of the episodes in color, to stare what the audience saw when they were there watching the actors in person. It was especially nice to explore Lucy’s red hair, but I do have to admit I great steal the series in unlit and white because that’s what I’m traditional to.

Many people in the past reviews have mentioned I Care For Lucy: The Movie. Well to be impartial it’s only three episodes (The Succor, Breaking the Lease, and the Ballet) all one moral after the other with some extra minutes in between each episode to add a tale line from one episode to transition to another, so it flows together and makes sense to develop a movie length exhibit. It’s smooth mountainous to look, but it isn’t as gigantic a deal as I belief it was going to be.

And there are many other extra bonus features on each disc, the same bonus features that are on each of the season boxed sets. The discs are also the same in appearance both on the outside fair looking at it, and also once effect in the DVD player, on the main menu hide. Also what I have noticed on the bonus disc before choosing to play the commercial for Philip Morris, there is a warning label: “This material is shown in its historical context. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND SMOKING, WHICH CAUSES LUNG CANCER, AND OTHER DISEASES.”

On all of the discs there are Spanish Subtitles, and on every season disc (not the bonus DVD) you can determine to gawk any episode with English or Spanish as the spoken language.

Also on the first season discs in this place, on the main menu cloak you can resolve to play all episodes on the disc or play them individually. If you settle to play them all by clicking the “play all” button on the hide, the I Savor Lucy song plays with Ricky singing the lyrics. Then there is a group of people singing the song true before it ends. There are several different scenes from the display that explain on the veil while the song is playing. Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel are in color on the cover during the song, but everything else is in shadowy and white. The pilot episode on the first disc from the first season, I was surprised how determined the mask was. All of the discs have such definite describe quality, remarkable better quality on these discs than on reruns on TV. Of course it may depend on how edifying a narrate your TV gets. There is also a pamphlet or microscopic thin book (whatever you want to call it) that tells you what is on each disc. For each page in it, it lists each episodes title, the air date and a diminutive summary about the episode. And below the episode lists/guides, there are “Bonus Material Highlights” which mention which episodes from “My Current Husband” are on the disc and whatever special features the disc has: “Gradual the Scenes” Featurette, “Slack the Scenes” Coast Indicate, dawdle shows, Audio Commentary, Meet Special People, Photo Gallery etc. On each page, there are several photos of Lucy and the gang from different episodes as well. Also, unprejudiced like the DVDs and the book-like accordion CD cases are organized by color, so is the pamphlet/thin book. Season ones DVDs are pink, and so are the pages in the pamphlet/thin book for the pages that season one is on. Season three is colored blue, so the pages with season three are blue, and so are the DVDs and the slots to do them away in.

The pamphlet/thin book fits inside the box with the two CD cases. The shroud for the box, with the I Like Lucy logo on it, fits nicely over it. It’s a cute scheme to store the series, but it probably could have been keep together better, but it’s level-headed tremendous for any Lucy lover, and it’s a astounding collectors item.

It really is a immense product, and better, a spacious explain! It’s colossal to spy over and over again.

Once a fan, always a fan!

I had purchased each season of “I Savor Lucy” and enjoyed them. But I decided to pass them off to my mother so she could delight in the episodes whenever she wanted – and in the process, made my two nieces fans of Lucy’s. They admire to exercise time at Grandma’s watching the demonstrate with her. But I started to miss my DVD collection. Then I spotted the Complete Series station at Target for $140 and couldn’t pass it up. While not a fan of the arrangement the studios are treating consumers by releasing a “Complete Series Box Area” with fresh extras – Studios, please allow fans who have already purchased these discs the opportunity to also gather the bonuses – this space is done factual.

First, the packaging is orderly, though not the best. There are two accordian-style books made of a glossy type of paper with color-coded slots for each season and each slot numbered for each disc per season – one disc per slot. The discs should be safer in this than if they were in paper sleeves, which based on past reviews of other sets tumble apart and glue gets transfered to the discs – that won’t happen with this region. The discs for Seasons 2-9 are the genuine same discs as what were released in the season sets (except disc 5 from Season 4 has the missing scenes in the bonus features that were discovered after the recent discs were pressed – a replacement disc was available from Paramount) . But the Season 1 discs are brand-new. The episodes have been digitally restored and they inspect fantastic. I can’t gain the dissimilarity from the previous release. The Season 1 episodes in the current release had a more grainy survey compared to the rest of the series. They are now spicy and positive – very microscopic grain. They now gaze as pleasant as the rest of the series. I have noticed that any extras that expose smoking (such as an new commercial) has a warning stating that this is being shown in a historical context and that smoking is dreadful for you. There is a booklet that lists all the episodes on each disc. The descriptions are taken from the disc covers of the novel sets. Plus it lists a few bonus highlights for each disc and now I know which episodes of “My Popular Husband” are on each disc. But the best allotment is the Bonus Disc. There are several bonus features on it, but I will only conceal two – the others are the opening commercial from the first episode, clips from the Emmys (Vivian Vance and I Fancy Lucy won), Lucy and Desi’s first appearance together on TV on Ed Wynn’s explain. First, the colorized episode of “Lucy Goes to Scotland.” WOW! I disfavor colorization but this one was done with appreciate. Using color publicity photos and the color dress rehearsal footage (and current technology), this episode was colorized and looks unbelievable. Even “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie” (which were colorized only a couple of years ago) don’t even arrive finish to this.
